The fashionable paisley pattern, developed in India, is based on the shape of a mango
Mangos are the most well-liked fruit in the world. They were first
grown in India over 5,000 years ago and they continue to be the leading
producers. Very little amounts of mango are exported because in India
this fruit is a symbol of love, and giving someone a basket of mangos is
a gesture of friendship. The Portuguese's arrival in India in the 15th
spread the fruit to South America, the Philippines and West Africa. It
reached Mexico in the 19th century and the Unites States in 1860. Our
country shared the same enthusiasm as those that indulged in it before
us!
Most of the mangos sold in the U.S. come from Mexico, Peru, Ecuador,
Brazil, Guatemala and Haiti but thankfully they are available all year
long. Most of the mangos sold in the U.S. are one of six varieties:
- Tommy Atkins
- Haden
- Kent
- Keitt
- Ataulfo
- Francis
