Potatoes

Potatoes were grown in Space. NASA and the University of Wisconsin, Madison created the technology in order to feed astronauts on long space voyages.

The potato was first domesticated in the thin air of the Andes Mountains some 7,000 years ago. Western man came in contact with it in 1537 when the conquistadores invaded Peru. In 1570 the first potato made it to the European continent and it has since spread around the world and become a staple crop in many countries. The potato arrived to the American colonies in 1621. Idaho, the present-day largest producer did not begin to grow potatoes until 1836 and the industry did not begin to flourish until 1872 when the Russet Burbank variety was developed.
