Tomatoes

While tomatoes are perfectly safe and healthy to eat, their leaves are actually toxic

Tomatoes are thought to have originate in South America; more specifically, in Peru. The name comes from the Aztec word xitomatl which means plump thing with a navel. From here it was introduced and then revered by many other cultures. When it was introduced to Europe in the 1500s, The French called it the apple of love and The Germans referred to it as the apple of paradise. Tomatoes where then cultivated in what is now South Carolina in the 18th Century, and introduced to the Middle East in the mid-19th century.

Today, tomatoes grow plentifully in every state except for Alaska with California and Florida being the top producers. There are at least 10,000 varieties of tomatoes, so grab your favorite type of tomato and slice it, grill it, or make it into salsa The possibilities are endless.
